Alfie Skelton Award
Honouring a Teammate, a Friend, and a Legacy
Alfie Skelton was a talented and much loved player within Guildford Junior Ice Hockey Club. A strong defenceman with huge potential, Alfie proudly represented both our U16 and U18 teams.
Tragically, in March 2011, Alfie’s life was cut short at just 15 years old following a freak accident while fishing on a Surrey pond. His sudden loss devastated his family, friends, teammates, and the wider hockey community.
To ensure Alfie’s spirit and contribution to the club are never forgotten, Guildford Junior Ice Hockey Club has retired his #10 jersey across all teams. No GJIHC player will ever wear that number again, keeping it reserved in Alfie’s memory.
Alongside this, the club created the Alfie Skelton Award. It is presented annually to a player who reflects the qualities Alfie brought to the rink: dedication, determination, team spirit, and a positive influence on those around them.
About the Alfie Skelton Award
Who is eligible?
Players in the U16 to U18 age bracket.
What does it recognise?
Significant improvement in hockey ability, as well as personal commitment, attitude, and character both on and off the ice.
Why these teams?
At the time of his passing Alfie proudly represented both the U16s and U18s, making it fitting that the award continues within those age groups.
Keeping Alfie’s Spirit Alive
The Alfie Skelton Award is more than just a trophy. It is a reminder of a teammate gone too soon, and a celebration of the values that make our sport so special: teamwork, resilience, and friendship.
Every player who receives the award carries forward Alfie’s legacy and ensures his presence remains part of our club.
Past Recipients
Each year, one player is selected by coaches and management to receive the award. Their names are added to the club’s history as part of Alfie’s legacy.
